In 2015, Samantha Sedran and Katrina Usmar attended Bot Camp. They enjoyed their time so much, that they wanted to help more girls experience what it’s like to go to robotics camp – especially those who couldn’t afford it. Since then, they have launched their “16 by 16 Campaign,” challenging themselves to raise funds to send 16 girls to robotics camp before Samantha and Katrina reach the age of 16.
This summer, a talented cohort of five girls attended Bot Camp thanks to full-scholarships provided by SK Creations. From July 16-20, 2018, Aishah, Jumaina, Kazi Zahraa, Sreshtha, and Unaizah attended the Victoria Park Collegiate Institute campus, learning to design, build, program and pilot competitive robots. They received instruction in a 4 to 1 ratio from our staff of award-winning competitive roboticists, and built robots in a 2 to 1 ratio, playing this year’s official VEX IQ game: Next Level.
Bot Camp really believes in SK Creation’s campaign, and we’ve provided an in-kind donation towards their cause. If you are interested in supporting Samantha and Katrina too, please visit their GoFundMe page here.
The gender gap in STEM fields is very real, and this initiative is one of the best we’ve seen to help close it.
